Cerro Gordo Soil and Water
Conservation District

Our Mission

Our rich black soils in North Central Iowa are our greatest resource.  Our mission is to help landowners and producers to do the best job possible of protecting and enhancing our soil and water resources.  We administer local, state, and federal conservation programs that provide financial and technical assistance to implement structures and practices to preserve our soil and water.

Healthy Soils

Soil health is a new measure of the productivity and sustainability of the land.  Soil health is improved through reducing tillage, the use of cover crops and crop rotations, and an increased awareness of the biology of the living soil.

The Cerro Gordo Soil and Water Conservation District office partners with the United Sates Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS), and the local Conservation District.  Our District was formed in 1947 to assist farmers in protecting their soil and water resources.
The quality of our water
affects all of us

 We have a winner!!
Each school year, the Cerro Gordo District Commissioners and the  Conservation Districts of Iowa sponsor a conservation and agriculture scholarship program.  Scholarships are offered to high school seniors for their first year of education at the college level pursuing programs of study in any field of agriculture or natural resources.  This years winner of a $500 scholarship from the district was Collin Witte of Rockwell.  Caleb Turek of Clear Lake placed second and received a $250 scholarship.  Collin also placed second at the state level and will be awarded a $2000 scholarship from the Conservation Districts of Iowa.

Cover Crops

Cover crops, either aerially applied or drilled after harvest provide protection from erosion, nutrient salvage and improved weed control.  Cost-share is available for the first two years of this practice.
      No-Till

Reducing tillage is the single best thing a producer can do to reduce soil and nutrient losses from the land.  Cost-share is available for adopting no-till practices.

The Cerro Gordo Soil and Water District Commissioners meet every month, usually on the third Wednesday of each month.

The next meeting of the Cerro Gordo SWCD commissioners will be on April 21, 2021 at 12:00pm.  The meeting will be held via Zoom.  For a copy of the tentative agenda and zoom log in information contact Marcia Mork, CA at Marcia.Mork@ia.nacdnet.net or call 641-424-4452.

Due to COVID 19 directives, all SWCD/NRCS offices are not open to the public at this time but can be reached by phone.
